Views of Scotland was formed as an Organisation at the June 2002 Perth Conference on Renewable energy. We seek to bring the facts surrounding renewable energy decisions to the Scottish people and their political representatives. A lack of co-ordination by the Scottish Executive, and an exaggerated belief in the usefulness of wind farms, is leading to over investment in a single form of renewable energy to the detriment of the wider Scottish economy. The unco-ordinated and unbalanced rush into wind power stifles other forms of renewable energy by diverting investment from them. It destroys jobs in tourism by destroying the landscape upon which those jobs depend. It negates any contribution it makes to sustainability by destroying habitats. It is an expensive option. Scotland can more rapidly achieve targets for renewable energy and inject capital into local communities by shifting from wind farms into energy crops, tidal, wave and solar power. By seeking a co-ordinated Energy strategy we hope to see ALL forms of renewable energy make contributions to the Scottish economy. This will require a rational and balanced policy of selecting the most sensible form of energy for a particular community, one which is acceptable to that community. The siting of huge on-shore wind farms in, or close to, areas of great scenic and ecological value and close to people's homes is not acceptable to an increasing number of communities.
